BMI View: Japan finds itself at a crossroads, following the election of Shinzo Abe in late 2012. Abe’s ambitious plans for national revival are designed to kick-start the national economy, and also to make the country more assertive on security issues. In particular, Tokyo is concerned about perceived Chinese aggression, and hawks like Abe want Japan to stand up to Chinese pressure and protect the country’s sovereignty.
